The History of the Special Olympics

Eunice Kennedy Shriver began Special Olympics in the early 1960s. She started a day camp when she learned that mentally handicapped people were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought.

Today, Pennsylvania Special Olympics (the 2nd largest program in the nation) serves over 27,000 athletes participating in 22 Olympic-type sports at 300 local, sectional, and state-level competitions. The 2008 spring games attracted well over 1,000 Special Olympic athletes from across Central PA.
