She started a day camp when she learned that mentally handicapped people were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. Today, Pennsylvania Special Olympics (the 2nd largest program in the nation) serves over 27,000 athletes participating in 22 Olympic-type sports at 300 local, sectional, and state-level competitions.
